I’m glad I’m not thee only one that feels like that about their bestfriend.
A lot of people fall for their best friends. It makes sense, you don’t give someone that title unless you feel like you want to share a significant amount of your life with them. Sometimes that bond causes a romantic spark… usually one-sided. Usually. -_-
Aesop Rock - Daylight
Life’s not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman
You only call her a bitch ‘cause she won’t let you get that pussy
Maybe she didn’t feel y’all shared any similar interests
Or maybe you’re just an asshole who couldn’t sweet talk the princess
Belle & Sebastian “If You’re Feeling Sinister”
I’ve been totally blocked lately, and I needed to relieve some of that. In order to do so, I went through my library and found 36 songs that have parts in them that turn me on in some way or another. They may be awesome, beautiful, heartbreaking - whatever. Most of these wouldn’t qualify as “favorite songs”. They do however exhibit what scientists have deemed “the good part.”
Now that’s not to say that this is a list of ALL of my favorite song parts, but here are some of them.
I am not anything more than a half-competent audio editor, and I could have made it sound better, but I spent the last 3 and a half hours on it as it is.
I hope you can relate at least a little bit. Here is a direct link in case you want to study it and read along.
St. Vincent - Actor - If all I had ever heard or seen of Annie was this little gasp, it would be enough to make me fall in love with her.
The Beatles - And Your Bird Can Sing - This specific vocal harmony is one of the reasons I love music.
Radiohead - Bulletproof - I’ve tried to explain the flood that Ed’s guitar makes here for almost 15 years. I give up.
Broken Social Scene - Churches Under The Stairs - Have we established that punchy Jazz basses are awesome?
The Who - Baba Oriley - Fucking duh.
Elliott Smith - Angeles - My acoustic had a capo on the 5th fret for about a week and a half after he died. It hurts to hear.
John Vanderslice - Sarah Shu - God I love tape.
Feist - Intuition - The way that ƒ is singing this, playing with the horns and the piano is just incredible. You add Julie Penner and her violin and this is perfection.
The Beatles - Helter Skelter - Clearly you can tell I’m a fan of Paul
Radiohead - Letdown - The twinkley sounds and then the floor tom build into the last verse are one of about a hundred tiny moments on this album that make it perfect.
Stars - One More Night - Lyrics can be surly and deliver the pure hatred of a song about fucking someone in order to try and kill them - but making the music do it - that’s hard.
Ben Folds - Emaline - Whenever he or Fiona Apple use a foot and piano as a kickdrum, it makes my inner child giggle a little bit. It also sounds fucking awesome.
Emily Haines - Doctor Blind - The string arrangement fighting the piano - Instant love.
Ryan Adams and The Cardinals - Hard Way To Fall - This was recorded in the late ’30s…No that’s not right, I mean mid 2000s. Sorry, honest mistake.
Coconut Records - It’s Not You It’s Me - Schwartzman saying “guitar…” right before Sam Farrar cuts you with a guitar.
Bjork - Its Oh So Quiet - SHHHHHH.
The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money - Makes me happy that they finally got to record in stereo.
Ryan Adams - Nightbirds - The bass makes my bones creak.
John Vanderslice - Pale Horse - I SAID I LOVE TAPE.
Broken Social Scene - Lover’s Spit - One of my favorite riffs ever.
The Beatles - Paperback Writer - Oh hello, Paul. Its nice to hear your bass the way it should be for the first time.
Ben Folds - Gone - Not a lot of things can remind you of Huey Lewis and The News and have that be a great thing.
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall - The cello moan (its a synth, not a real cello) just before the last bass string is plucked - Instant transportation to the lower east side of Manhattan. Its 2004 and I’m on the rooftop of a building. I am very very messed up and I have absolutely no business being here.
Blur - Girls & Boys - One of few songs in existence that will actually make me get up and dance. How sad for everyone but me.
Broken Social Scene - Pacific Theme - Instant happiness.
The Clash - Revolution Rock - Say whatever you want about how awesome the clash are, Topper Headon was the reason why they sounded really great and versatile and different on London Calling
Stars - Take Me To The Riot - I could have chosen any song where Amy and Torq sing together…it just doesn’t matter. Its always perfect.
The Velvet Underground - Run, Run, Run - SO loose. SO perfect.
John Vanderslice - Golden Gate - You hear that? Where it turned from maybe an fm synth to an actual string section? Yeah. This is why I will continue to give JV money whenever I can in the form of buying tickets, merch and records, and love whenever I see him in the form of hugs.
Elliott Smith - XO - Instant tears
Bob Dylan - Shelter From The Storm - one of my favorite lines in one of my favorite songs ever
Elliott Smith - XO - Did you hear me the first time? I SAID tears.
Stars - What The Snowman Learned About Love - “Everything is going to be okay”
Radiohead - The Tourist - The perfect end to THE perfect album.
Jesus christ. 3 and a half hours? Do you think that’s a problem?
This is brilliant. Most of these are some of my favorites also, I love the inclusion of Girls & Boys.
Schneider TM - The Light 3000 (Smiths Cover)
And in the darkened underpass
I thought “Oh God, my chance has come at last”
But then a strange fear gripped me and I just couldn’t ask
